Stuck In The Middle With You

“Stuck in the Middle with You” lives in the key of D and uses a simple set of chords—D, G, A, A7, and C—but the challenge isn’t the chords. It’s the groove. This song is built on a tight, syncopated strumming feel that sits right between laid-back and locked-in, and that’s where most players start to drift.

In the verse, the feel comes from consistently hitting the “ands” with your upstrokes, while the downbeats are replaced with a muted palm slap on the strings. That contrast between rhythm and silence is what gives the part its character. It’s not about strumming more—it’s about strumming less, but with intention. If the timing of those upstrokes isn’t solid, the whole groove starts to feel off pretty quickly.

Another layer of difficulty comes from the chord changes, especially when they happen right after the “and” of 4. That split-second timing forces you to stay relaxed and ahead of the beat without rushing. It’s subtle, but it’s everything. Even when recording this, I found myself wanting to sway with it a bit—that’s how deceptive the groove is. The goal isn’t perfection right away—it’s getting comfortable enough with the feel that the rhythm starts to settle into your hands naturally.
